What is an Apothecary?
History shows us that ancient methods of healing were in use for many hundreds of years. Depending on the local culture, a person seeking relief from illness would visit a medicine man, an herbalist, a shaman, or an apothecary. All were “healers” within their own societies, and they relied mostly on plants, clays, soils, minerals and even the meats, fats, and skins of animals for medicinal purposes. In addition to dispensing medicines, the apothecary offered general medical advice and even performed surgeries. The word apothecary is still used to describe a person or place that dispenses or provides natural medicine to the public. In many parts of Europe, the word apothecary or its Greek root apotheke, is still used to designate a “pharmacist/chemist” instead of the more currently used title of “pharmacist/pharmacy.”
